LIVELY

Columbia Public Library
Columbia, Missouri

Date: 2002 Size: 110,000 s.f.

Besides the entry tower, the library is composed of a semi-cylindrical collections area, the rectangular administration wing and an oblong utility spine that anchors the composition. Each major section is clad in a unique material to identify varied functions but more importantly create chapters like a novel where the setting is different and the plot takes twists and turns. The striking, identifiable geometric forms and creative use of materials produce strong impressions for both users and staff. The result is a building that provides a setting where a visit to the library itself is a lively, spirited journey, a tale of discovery, not just a footnote along the way.
