The arts center also acts as a gateway to the University from the community. The large glass lobby offers a sweeping vista across the bay to the east and also provides views to the inner campus to the west. The material selections of both pre-cast concrete and brick respect campus precedent while responding to selective local environmental conditions. The design also creates exterior green spaces that enhance the pedestrian approach from the campus. The project illustrates that responsive design can incorporate a variety of functional parameters as well as client and community concerns while ultimately providing a building intimately suited to its purpose and place.
