Creating an addition to a cultural icon such as this 1901 hotel prominently situated on a pivotal Pennsylvania Avenue is a daunting task. The challenge was to create a complement to the great hotel; to find a solution that defers to the historic integrity when necessary and also interpret elements of the existing building to create a bold new addition that is neither copy nor a competitor to the original.
